How Can My Learning Help My Community
ATMOSPHER and POWERGAME(y)

TECH 2

Area of Interaction: Community and Service
Significant Concept: Video games can be used to understand math, technology, engineering, social studies, English, and/or science.
Unit Question: How can my learning help my community?

You will receive an academic grade and an MYP grades for this assignment.

Requirements:

-Take the test on Skyward
-Create a video game for 4th grade students. Your game needs to help 4th grade students with one subject area. You can use the following site to help you: UEN
-Choose a video game site to use, such as Atmosphir, Power Game, or your favorite game maker site.
-Your game needs to have at least 5 levels.
-Complete the Design Cycle
-Use the brainstorming chart.
-Use the storyboard
-Spend one day practicing Atmosphir or Power Game.
-Your Assignment is due September 9.

INVESTIGATE: (Write in complete sentences)
With some teacher support,
- completely explain the problem, considering its importance to your life.
We aremaking educational games for fourth graders and it has to entertain them for at least thirty minutes. This could make it so then it is easier for students to progress at harder subjects.
- investigate the problem, evaluate information from a variety of appropriate, recognized sources. We have to make sure it is possible for them to conquer, which is why we kept on making it easier and asking people to test it. We have looked at the educational web pages and have decided to do math and if they choose the right answer, then they can progress.
- describe and explain that you understand all of the requirements and how the project will be graded. It has to be long enough that they can't pass it all in five minutes, educational, and not impossible. We will be graded on the quality, the questions and our creativity as well as our ability to follow the design cycle.

DESIGN AND PLAN:
With some teacher support,
- create a range of possible designs, each evaluated and compared to the project requirements.
- give a good reason for choosing your design, and evaluate with the requirements.

Brainstorming Chart:
Use Atmosphir-Do math and tell them to go one way if the answer is right and the other way if its wrong.
Pros: We can use the notes and it will be easier
Cons: Never used Atmosphir before

Use Powergame-We could tell them the probability of landing on a block.
Pros: Used it before
Cons: We can't post notes

Use Atmosphir-We could use health education and put different types of fruits that are healthy and not healthy.
Pros: There are different types of food on Atmosphir
Cons: The unhealthy food helps you more than healthy food.

Plan:
Investigate Atmosphir for first 2 days (Aug 29, 30)
Finish Skyward 3rd day and make plan (Aug 31)
Start on Level 1 on 4th day
Continue with Level 1 on 5th day
Have someone test it on 6th day and make changes

Start on Level 2 on 7th day
Continue working on Level 2 on 8th day
Have someone test it on 9th day and make changes
Make sure Level 1 and Level 2 are long enough and they include the requirements and finish up anything else on 10th-12th day.

With some teacher support,

- produce a plan that contains a number of detailed, logical steps that describes the use of resources and time. Remember this is due Sept 9. Make a plan of how you are going to get everything finished!

- evaluate the plan and record changes made to the design.

CREATE:
With some teacher support,
- skillfully use appropriate techniques and equipment.
- follow your plan and give reasons for any changes you made.
- the result is a project that is of appropriate quality, using all the resources you had available.

EVALUATE:

With some teacher support,
- evaluate the success of the product based on the design specifications, results of testing, and thefeedback from self and others. People thought that our game was hard, so then we changed it until it was mostly possible. Actually, we probably made it so easy that a fourth grader could do it.

- provide an evaluation of your performance at each stage of the design cycle and suggests improvements. We were pretty good, we designed well and kept on evaluating and fixing our problems. I think we could have done better though by pretending that it didn't bring us that much enjoyment to watch the 9th graders fail our levels.
- provide an appropriate evaluation of the impact of the project on life, society and/or the environment (unit question). If we can create a more fun way to study, and work on math or homework then kids will want to do it more and then they will learn more, do better in school and our society will get just a little bit better for it.

ATTITUDE:
With some teacher support,
- consistently display a satisfactory standard in the following two areas:
1. motivation, independence, attitude
2. safety, cooperation, and respect for others

How You Will Receive a Letter Grade:
- Create a video game for 4th grade students with 5 levels = +100, you will receive 20 points for each level.
  • Questions = +10
  • Quality = +5
  • Creativity = +5

- Complete the Design Cycle = +50
- Use the brainstorming chart = +20

- Use the storyboard = +20

- Spend one day practicing Atmosphir or Power Game = +10

GRAND TOTAL = 200 POINTS

You will receive an MYP grade for each step of the Design Cycle.
